AUCKLAND TRANSPORT.

OPPOSITION TO COMMISSION.

PROTEST FROM NEW LYNN.

'A report on the result of the meeting held by local bodies in connection with the proposed Transport Commission was made to the New Lynn Town Board on Tuesday evening by the chairman, Mr. W. L. *Titchener. He said it was generally agreed that the commission would serve no good purpose, and that the local bodies would apparently, in the event of the commission sitting, be called upon to pay expenses. Mr. Titchener moved the following resolution:—"That the attention of the Government be drawn to these facts: (1) That the ivhole of the local bodies of the 'Auckland metropolitan area, with the single exception of the City Council, have definitely decided, and have recorded their opinions by resolution, that the proposed Transport "Commission will serve no good f>urposfl, and will entail heavy and useess expenditure on. their ratepayers. (2) That the Government's seeming determination to go on with the commission at the sole behest of the Auckland Citv Council will not settle the position at issue, namely, that the Auckland City Council tramways are not giving satisfactory service- to the outside districts. (3) That, as this is eminently a question which can be settled only by the direct voice of the public concerned, we call on the Government to hold, in. lieu of the proposed commission, a ballot throughout the area concerned on the following cmestion: 'That a Metropolitan Transport Board be set up to control and Tun the passenger service of the metrofiolitan area, excepting only ths railways, n such manner as the said board shall deem fit." Th<s resolution was carried unanimously. It W3,s agreed that a copv of the resolution be forwarded to the Government and that copies be sent to each of the local bodies in the metropolitan area with a view to similar resolutions being carried at their meetings.
