WAIKATO COUNTY ROADS.
CONTROL AND UPKEEP. DECISIONS OF THE COUNCIL. [HY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HAMILTON, Wednesday. The Waikato County Council met yesterday, Mr. W. Newell presiding. The Treasury advised that the council owed the Main Highways Board £1893 with respect of moneys spent on tho Main South Road between Ohinewai and Ngaruawahia, and that the sum would be deducted from Government subsidies due to the council, unless arrangements for payment were made. The council decided to pay tho amount in instalments over a period of four years. . It was decided to express the hope that the Highways Board would give the council control of the road on the basis of the board paying the council maintenance subsidies at the rate of £3 for £l.
Mr. A. W. Chaph&m, on behalf of the Woodlands Drainage Board, asked the council to subsidise the cost of cleaning the Piako Road drain, which was considerably damaged for a distance of two miles, as the result of the peat fires which occurred in the Ruakura swamp. The council resolved to ask the Wood* lands Board to call tenders for the work. When the cost was ascertained the council would give the request, favourable consideration.
Proposals submitted* by the engineer, Mr. A. A. Woodward, for metalling and double-sealing the Hamilton-Mo'rrinsville Road, from the Hamilton boundary to the Eureka Hall, at a cost of £13,534, were adopted. •
