OBITUARY.

MR. CROSDELL BRINDLE

[sr TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MATAMATA, Wednesday.

The death has occurred at Matamata of Mr. Crosdell Brindle, a veteran of the Maori Wars, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Brindle, who had been farming at Matamata for 20 years, joined the transport service of the 3rd Waikato Regiment at the age of 17, and saw service in Taranaki, Wanganui and the Waikato. He was awarded the Maori War Medal and recently the King's Empire Veterans' Medal. He was a non-smoker and a teetotaller, and never had a day's Sickness until about eight years ago- Prior to taking up farming at Matamata he erected most of the road fences in the district before the Firth Estate was subdivided. He had also farmed at Cambridge arid Gordon.

MR. HUMPHREY HEWARI). The death occurred in .Dunedin recently of Mr. Humphrey Heward, aged 73, for many years a well-known member of the teaching profession in Auckland. Mr. Heward was born in Leicestershire in 1855 and in 1885 married the only daughter <if Mr. James Snedley, of Velper, Derbyshire. He came to New Zealand four years later and commenced teaching. At tho time of his retirement in 1920 he was headmaster of Te Papa pa publio school. Mr. Heward is survived by. his wife, two sons, Mr. E. H. Heward, of Mapavtra, and Mr H. R. Heward, of Auckland, and two daughters, Mrs. S. P. W. Strain, of Dunedin, and Miss G. H. of Thames. The funeral took place in Dunedin.

MB. A. E. W. GIBBS, [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANOA, Wednesday. The death occurred this morning of Mr. Albert Edward Walter Gibbs, who had been a resident of Tauranga for about three years. The late Mr. Gibbs was born in London and educated there, and later in Germany. He was trained as an accountant. He went to America and after 6ome years joined the firm of S. Pearson and Son, who were then engaged in making the harbour of Yep Cruz in Mexico, and he was afterwards in Havana. Later he returned to England, and came out to New Zealand abopt four and a-half years ago with his wife and a son, who survive him.
