GENERAL ELECTION.
OF THE ROLLS.
WORK ALREADY STARTED*
v CHANGES IN BOUNDARIES.
( COMPULSORY ENROLMENT.
There are still a number of months to pass before, the general election, but the preparation of the rolis in readiness for it is a lengthy process, and preliminary arrangements are already in hand in the office of the Auckland registrar of elector?.
The introduction of a new electorate, to be known 83 Auckland Suburbs, as created by the Representation Commission of last year, involves a great deal of rearrangement of boundaries in and about the city. Auckland Suburbs electorate, (which starts at the Whau Creek and runs right through to the Manukau Harbour, consists of an area that was formerly yery largely in the Eden electorate. In accordance with the Representation Commission's findings, the new Eden electorate will take in part of Roskill raid part lof Grey Lynn. The new Roskill electorate will in turn absorb territory from the Eden and the Mamikau electorates.
There are changes also in the Auckland East boundaries, which will now include a part of the Central electorate. Under the new plan Psmell will run down to fit. Heliers Bay, taking in part of ManuIcaa, and Manukau Road will form part of the boundary between Parnell and East.
The registrar's staff still requires to Vork on the old boundaries, as the new ones have not yet been officially authorised from Wellington, and are not expected to be for a month, or perhaps a couple of months yet. The necessary transfers from one electorate to another will thea be made in the office without any action jbcing required from electors. In order |lk> avoid any confusion that might be eAused by the transfers the registrar will notify individually any elector who has 3>een transferred to a different roll. The successful prosecution a week ago tof'a roan ■who had failed to enrol as an elector in Roskill served to remind a great many people that they were under statutory obligation in this matter, and applications for enrolment have been pouring in sinco particulars of the case were published. ■ An • adult qualifies to be an elector by three months* residence, and the period of grace for enrolment after that has recently been shortened to one month. tAoy elector who fails to notify the registrar of a change of address is also under Btatutory penalty. Prior to last election the, postmen gave great assistance to the registrars of electors by leaving enrolment forms and making inquiries at every house. Whether * simiiar plan will be followed this year has not. yet been determined.
