AMERICAN MARATHON.

LOS ANGELES TO NEW YORK.

FIELD OF 249 COMPETITORS. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK, March 5. Starting from Puente, California, 249 runners have comploted the first lap of a transcontinental Marathon footrace between Los Angeles and New York. The first Jap was short, but later the men will travel about 55 miles a day. They ■will be brought together at night, and will start off again each morning. They expect to reach New York in about 65 to 70 days. The race was organised by Mr. C. C. Pyle, who expects to gain £40,000 from concessions granted to those following the runners.
