WANGANUI WATER SUPPLY.
STORAGE DAM ENLARGED.
COMPLETION OF THE SCHEME. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANOI, Tuesday. The rapid growth of Wanganui to its present position as the fifth city of New Zealand is reflected in the great expansion made in recent years in its municipal services, especially the water supply. The members of the City Council to-day made an inspection of the works at Gkehu, about 15 miles from the city, on the 26th anniversary of the adoption of the original scheme.
When the main dam was built provision was made for the storage of 5,000,000 gallons of water, which was considered sufficient for the needs for many years, but with the unexpected development of the city additions became necessary. About 15 months ago a commencement was made with the work of enlarging the dam. This has now been finished, and gives a total storage of 15,000,000 gallons. The cost of the extensions was £10,200. The rain of the past week has effected an improvement in the level, which is now only 9ft. below the spillway, giving a depth of 36ft.
