TRAINING AT RICCARTON.

SOME INTERESTING GALLOPS.

CANDIDATES FOR TRENTHAM. [by TELEGRAPH. —rRESS CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday.

The weather was fine for training operations this morning. The outside of the course proper was open and a number of horses galloped there, while others patronised the plough. Candidates for the Tientham and Waimate meetings provided a fair amount of interest.

Rapier was responsible for a useful effort over nipe furlongs on the grass. After goin.T; two furlongs alone he was picked up by Lancer and the pair came home together, taking 1.33, while Rapier's time for the full journey was 1.57 3-ss. It was a useful gallop, as Rapier was going particularly well all through. Eulalie covered seven furlongs on the plough in 1.31, and finished well. Sudden Storm had Quarterdeck as a mate for seven furlongs on the plough, which occupied 1.32 4-5, but they were not ridden out.

Footfall and Starflight were not unduly hurried while doing seven furlongs on the grass in 1.33.

Swoopalong was restricted to a round on the plough at half pace, while Wild Work was given a working gallop over seven furlongs on the grass.

Silver Coot reeled off six furlongs on the grass in 1.16 2-5, an attractive effort. Prickles sprinted half a mile up the back on the grass in 50 4 ss. Starshooter ran half a mile on the grass in 50s and Chide took 54s over the same ground without being bustled.

Goblin Market occupied 1.18 2-5 over an easy six furlong spin on the grass. Battle Colours beat Nincompoop over seven furlongs on the grass, both horses galloping attractively. Battle Colours is looking very well. Fair Exchange showed plenty of dash while reeling off seven furlongs on the grass in 1.30 2-5.

Money Order Bprinted half a mile on the grass in 50 3-5s and did .it in his usual free style. 1 Countersign and Rotor took 1.19 for six furlongs on the plough and could have done better.

Royal Land (E. Shaw) shaped creditably in a school over two hurdleu. Koauau covered six furlongs on the plough in 1.20 1-5, going at an even pace all the way. Fresco and~ a four-year-old Sarto—Glenluce gelding ran half a mile on the grass in 50 4-ss, with the latter in front at the finish.

Hoylake took 52 4-5s for half a mile on the grass and Assurance got through a similar task.

A two-year-old by Warplane from Glenluce in F. Christmas' stable narrowly defeated H. Nurse's Greyspear—Spike colt over half a mile on the grass in 50s, with a Clarenceaux gelding, also in Nurse's taam, two lengths away.

Te Awhina did easy wqrk over half a mile.

Polydectcs reeled off six furlongs on the grass in 1.17 3-5 and finished strongly.

NOTES FROM WANGANUI. HORSES FOR TRENTHAM. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ' WANGANUI, Tuesday. Lysander looked a bit on the big side when ho raced at Wanganui. his trainer having purposely refrained from giving him much fast work in order to see if he would do any better than he had done at Ellerslie. prior to which he had put in a lot of fast work. The son of Absurd did not run up to expectations in the Jackson Stakes, fading out over the last bit. He has been kent in steady work since and will be taken to Trentham.

F. Tilley will take a team of four to comprising Mandane. Laughing Prince. Limited, and Consent. Both Laughing Prince and Mandane figure in the Thompson Handicap and the better of thi3 pair on the day should have something to say in the finish of the big mile race.

Daman's and Episode will also be seen out at Trentliam. Both are looking well and the former should be seen to advantage on that courso if she is ever going to do any good. Fpisode appears to be making steady improvement. She is not engaged on the first day, but will be a runner in the Pacific Handicap on the second day. She raced well at Ellerslie and is likely to do better at Trentham, but will probably not touch her best form until Easter.

The Maniapoto gelding Vaninia, has been put into work again and is being schooled over the hurdles. It will be remembered that this gelding tried to clear a fence Bft. surrounding the birdcage at a meting some 18 months ago. He has quietened down a lot and has been jumping well recently. Manly is being spoken of as n, likely winner of the Opunake Cup, in which event he has 7.2.

Nucleus did not race up to her Hawera form at Wanganui and may be seen to more advantage at Opunake. The Rangitikei Racing Club has been favoured with very fine nominations for its annual meeting on March 21 and 22, and this old-established club's fixture should prove very successful. Lady Desmond has been put into work again and figures among the entrants for the Rangitikei Cup. The racing at Bulls will help her along for her Easter engagements.

King Mart has gone on the tight way since the Wanganui meeting and he promises to be hard to beat in hia engagements at Bulls.

W. H. Dwyer has War Wings. Vexillum. and Limopa engaged at Bulls. Limosa is capable of something better than she has yet shown in public, a fact which she will demonstrate when caught in a galloping humour.

Wbenuatiui is looking very well nnd is likely to run a big race in St. Patrick's Handicap at Opunake, in which event be is nicely •weighted at 7.11.

NOTES FROM TBENTHAM. LITTLE WORK YESTERDAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. There is little activity at Trentham at present. The number of horses in commission is not great, and as most of them have raced during the past month they are being asked to do little on the track. ,T. Gnge Williams is keeping Staghunter going along quietly. It is understood the two-year-old is to have only one more race this season, and this will probably be in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton at Easter. A. Fratus has joined up with J. Gage Williams' stable at Trentham. He has replaced H. Burns, who has returned South. The Trentham trainer, J. McLaughlin, became ill suddenly during the Marlborough Club's meeting last week. He is now making progress toward recovery, but it will be some time before he • will be fit to return home.

A prominent Wellington owner was a possible buyer of Great Charter, with the idea of having him for & St. Leger candidate, but the price was too high. Mention of the St. Leger recalls the name of Wild Pigeon, who, nfter all, may have more than an outside chance. L. Wilson. W. Rayner, F. Tilley and V. Collelo have booked accommodation at Trentham.

There was practically no work at Trentam this morning. Light rain fell and will improve the tracks, which should be in great order for next week.

Panter, Wild Pigeon and Staghunter did useful work over short coarse*.
