IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL.

LATE BROTHER COLUMBANUS. TRIBUTE TO HIS SERVICE* The funeral took place yesterday of the Rev. Brother Columbanus, Assistant Superior-General of the Marist Brothers Order, who died in a private hospital in Auckland on Monday. A testimony to the popularity of Brother Columbanus was the large number of people who attended solemn requiem mass in St. Patrick's Cathedfal yesterday morning. There were present Marist Brothers and pupils of the various Roman Catholic schools, representatives. of the many religious orders, and a numbar of personal friends. The service was conducted by Dr. Listori, who was assisted by the Rev. Father McKeefry as deacon, and the Rev. Father Browne, as sub-deacon, D<r. Cleary presided in the Sanctuary, and was attended by the Very Rev. Monseigneur Cahill and the Very Rev. Father Robinson, provincial of the Redemptorist Fathers. Archdeacon Holbrook was master of ceremonies. At the conclusion of the mass, absolutions were pronounced by Dr. Cleary. Dr. Liston said it was 45 years ago that Brother Columbanus took his vows and received so gladly the yoke of Jesus Christ. They deplored- the loss of one who had done so much for the community generally, and for the cause of Christian education. Brother Columbanus was above all else a man of the liveliest faith, no doiibt inherited from his Irish forefathers.

Faith naturally begot zeal, and this zeal turned to the training of children. He served first as an officer in the classrooms and later as commanding officer. Dr. Liston urged the pupils not to let the noble life of Brother" Coiumbanus fade quickly from their memories, but to cherish it and allow it to guide them. The body of Brother Coiumbanus was buried in a private cemetery at Panmuro in a plot reserved for Marist Brothers. The service at, the graveside was conducted by Dr. Liston.
