TEE FOREIGN OFFICE.
TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS. SIR R. LINDSAY FOR GENEVA. (British Official "Wireless.) (Received March 5. 5.20 p.m.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY, March 4. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Sir Austen Chamberlain, has appointed Mr. Robert G. Vansittart, a counsellor at the Foreign Office, as AssistanHinder Secretary of State. He will remain seconded for sei'vice as,,principal private secretary to the Prime Minister. Mr. Lancelot Oliphant, also a counsellor, has been appointed as acting Assistant-Under Secretary. At the coming sittings of the Council of the League of Nations Sir Ronald Lindsay. until lately British Ambassador at Berlin, who has been appointed to succeed Sir William Tyrrell as Permanent Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, will attend as an observer.
Mr. Robert G. Vansittart was secretary to the late Lord Curzon when the latter was Foreign Secretary, 1920-24. Born in June) 1881, lie was educated at Eton College. He became an attache in 1902, third secretary ISOS, second secretary 1908, assistant clerk at the Foreign Officej 1914, first secretary, 1916, and subsequently a counsellor. He has filled diplomatic / posts in various foreign capitals. Mr. Lancelot Oliphant . has been a counsellor at the Foreign Office since 1923. He was born in 1881 and entered the Foreign Office in 1903. He was acting third secretary in the diplomatic service, 1905, second in that capacity at the British Embassy, at Constantinople, 1905-6, and again at the British Legation a-t Teheran, 1909-11. He became an assistant, clerk at the Foreign Office, 1916, and assistant secretary, 1920.
