TAXATION AT HOME.
DEMAND FOR RELIEF. GROUP OF CONSERVATIVES. (Received February 14, 9.20 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON. Feb. 13. In the Houseof Commons to-day Colonel J, Gretton, Conservative member for Burton, on behalf of the economy " group " of the Ministerialists, moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply regretting that the Government had not promised relief from taxation. Ho admitted that the cost of the fighting forces had substantially diminished except for the Air I'orce, but said the civilian staffs in most of the departments were swollen. Sir Frank Nelson, Conservative member for Stroud, in seconding the amendment, suggested that a select committee under the chairmanship of the head of one of the " Big Five " banks might discover redundancies in the Government s staffs. The amendment, was lost by 189 votes to 84. Five Ministerialists voted with the minority. '
