A young negro named Lawrence Newsome was tried at Goldsbro, North Carolina, on Sunday, December 11. for the murder of the 15-year-old daughter of a white farmer named Tedder. The trial was the first ever held on a Sunday in the State, the authorities being unwilling to hold it over for a day because of tho popular excitement aroused by the crime. Five minutes after the Court opened, the murdered girl's father and brother, and a crowd of townsfolk, crying "Get him!" suddenly rushed upon Newsome, who was surrounded by soldiers, and tore Eart of his clothes off before they could e jrepulsod. While the excitement was at its height the sheriff backed the prisoner into the ante-room and fired two shots into the air to intimidate the mob. Young Tedder was handcuffed to two policemen and his father to two other officers. The Judge produced an automatic pistol, laid it significantly beside him on the bench, and ordered the trial to proceed. At the end of 15 minutes the jury found the defendant guilty, the Judge sentenced him to death and he was hustled off to .prison at Raleigh, under j a military guard, which included a bat- | tary of artillery.
