Jv. 3>UNEDIN, Mr. Allen Arthur Orton, 8.A., M-Sc**-at present assistant lecturer in mather matics and physics at the University of Western Australia, -was appointed assistant to Professor R. J. F. Bell, professor of mathematics, at a meeting of the Otago University Council. Although only 30 years of age, Mr. Orton has had a wide experience in the teaching of mathematics and is in addition a trained teacher. : . r ' INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE-, the farming interests. Tuesday.,, A conference convened by the New Zear ; land Farmers' Union and attended by delegates from the Farmers' Union, the Royal Agricultural Society and tho Dairy Farmers' Union was held yesterday to formulate evidence for the national in-, dustrial conference to be held on March 27, which would meet the views of all primary producers.' It is reported that considerable surprise and disappointment was freely expressed by delegates at the representation allocated the New Zealand Farmers 8 Union in comparison with other farmers' organ* isations, as the Farmers* Union contained a much larger percentage of sheepfarmers and dairyfarmers than any othei; organisation representing the primary producers of the Dominion. Professor B. E. Murphy was present as advisor to the conference on questions. The following five delegates wera selected to represent the Farmers' Unioa at the national industrial conference Messrs. W. J. Poison, F. Colbeck, R. S. Chadwick, ]W. W. Mulholland and J» Carr. Another conference of fanners* organ* isations will probably be held at Wellington on-February 28, when the question will be further discussed. FARMERS' REPRESENTATION. PROPORTION CRITICISED. Dissatisfaction with the representation allotted to the farming industry at the forthcoming national industrial conference was voiced by members of the Auckland executive of the farmers* Union evening. "It would be better not to be repro. sented at all than to be represented inadequately," said Mr. H. M. Rushworth. Mr. W. Lee Martin, M.P. pointed out that the conference was to be a preliminary meeting to set np a committee ott which the proportion of representation would be more satisfactory. . T dancing.
