AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.
THIS WEEK'S FINE PICTURES. WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS. Foremost among a great variety of illustrations in the pictorial section of the Auckland Weekly News, published today, is a remarkably fine series of photographs secured in the Rotorua district, which combine to make a valuable souvenir for visitors to the thermal region. The frontispiece is a most striking and attractive study of Maori maids playing an ancieut native game, while in the background is the Papakura geyser belching clouds of steam. The centre double-jiage contains a wide assortment of views in Rotorua, including a comprehensive panorama of the town and appealing glimpses of its many attractions. The wheat harvest in Canterbury forms the subject of a full-page of very hne pictures illustrating attractively a most important New Zealand industry. Photographs taken in the West Coast Sounds, South Island, during a recent tour by a Southland party, make another very interesting full-page descriptive of the beauties of New Zealand fiordland. Recent climbing achievements in the Southern Alps are given prominence. Two ascents of Mount Rolleston, 8000 ft., by lady mountaineers, Miss Enga Washbourn, of Nelson, and Miss Nancy Mitchell, of Christchurch, provide the material for one set of striking views. The other set deals with the ascent of the Footstool, 9050 ft., by a party which included two boys, Harry Wigley, aged 14, and S. Wigley, aged 12. Various activities of the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson in Christchurch are shown, including the opening of St. George's Church of England Hospital, and of a fine swimming pool at Elmwood school, while there are also snapshots of a garden party given by the Bishop of Christchurch which Their Excellencies attended. Interesting photographs of the Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting last week are included in the issue, and the trotting match between Native Chief and Great Bingen in Christchurch last Saturday is also illustrated. Other subjects dealt with are: Unveiling of the handsome war memorial at Blenheim; life-saving contest in Canterbury; spectacular explosion at Horaliora hydro-electric works; Auckland provincial polo tournament; Palmerston North Girl Guides in camp; and numerous attractive scenic pictures from far and near. *
