LIBRARIANS' CONFERENCE.
OPENING AT CHRISTCHURCH.
VISITORS FROM OVERSEAS.

The Dominion Librarians' Conference opened in Christchurch to-day, Mr. J. J. Clarke, Dunsdin, presiding over a good attendance rf delegates. Visitors were also present from Australia and England. In extending a welcome to the delegates, tho Mayor, Rev. J. K. Archer, said he was hopeful of seeing the ;ime when a rat© would be struck for library work. There had been a big increase m the membership at the children s department of the Christchurch Library, and that department would create a good deal of discussion at future conferences. Mr. John Burns, Wellington, m replv, said it was well known that it was difficult at times to get the necessary finance for the development of libraries, especially for the junior readers. The Wellington City Council had a fine system of school libraries, which had exercised a big influence on the younger generations. The conference then' proceeded to discuss remits.
