ENCOURAGING ATHLETICS.
THE HERBERT SMITH FUND. PRIZE FOR SCHEME DIVIDED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Wednesday. None of the 30 schemes submitted in connection with the Herbert Smith Trust Fund competition was found acceptable by the trustees, Messrs. C. B. Smith and R. English, but the prize of £25 offered has been divided between Mr. Douglas Seymour, solicitor, Hamilton, and Mr. B. O'Neill, secretary of the New Zealand ,Amateur Swimming Association, their schemes being the best offered and being of equal merit. The scheme to be finally adopted has not yet been formulated. The late Mr. Herbert Smith left £IO,OOO to be expended by his trustees over a period of seven years by way of prizes for athletic competitions among the youth oi New Zealand between the ages of 9 and lf» years. He authorised the trustees to offer a prize of £525 to the person submitting the scheme most suitable for carrying his wishes into effect.
