LYTTELTON HARBOUR.
SILTING UP PROBLEM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. In a statement made to the Lyttelton Harbour Board to-day the acting engineer, Mr- P. W. Fryer, said that although 1.000,000 tons of spoil had been taken out of the harbour during the past two years tho channel was becoming shallower. The amount of spoil removed each year should deepen the channel by 3ft. yearly, but the channel was silting up to that extent each year. What was taken out by the dredge was a " mere fleabite " compared with that brought back by the sea. The board decided to obtain a report on the subject in six months' time and then possibly reclamation work on a large scale may be carried out.
