PRIVATIONS OF A CREW.
A SCHOONER ADRIFT. RESCUE BY A STEAMER. A story of the privations nnd hardships endured by the crew of the schooner Santa Rosa, which was adrift in a sinking condition 400 miles, east of New York, was told by officers of the steamer Canadian Transporter, at Sydney Jast week. The steamer, while on the way from Montreal to Australian ports, leacued the men after thoy had been drifting helplessly for five days. The Santa Rosa was laden with a cargo of lumber for New lork, when she encountered the full force of a cyclone. H<jr sails were blown away, and she was swept to sea. During tl:e night the schooner lan into some sunken wreckage. Her bows were stove in, the bottom was almost torn out, and the judder carried awav. Onjy the cargo kept the vessel afloat. The food was sodden, and the living quarters flooded, and the crew \\«s forced to live on the deck's, which, weie being swept by waves. Immediately tho Canadian Transporter was sighted, the crew of this schooner put off ii: a lifeboat, which, or, reaching the Canadian Transporter, crasJjed against lbe side, and was smashed to pieces. Under the instructions of Captain Roberts, of the Canadian Transporter, a b:>at put off for tho Santa Rost, to make an inspection. Salvage appeared hopeless, and it was decided to burn the vessel. The schooner was barnt to the water's edge, and the lumber, was in short lengths, floated free. The Sam a Rosa was a vessel of 700 tens gross, ihc rescued men were put ashore at Panama.
