LABOUR PARTY PICNIC.

VERY POPULAR OUTING. The Labour Party held a picnic at Pine Island yesterday, a crowd of over 1300 holiday-makers leaving by a special steamer at 9.30 in the morning. Over 300 people were unable to make the trip owing to all the available accommodation on board being occupied. During the journey the Waterside Workers' Silver Band played a number of selections. Daring the day swimming and games of all descriptions were indulged in, while many of the party rambled over the island in the afternoon. Children's games were held, toys being gjven to the successful competitors, while a sports meeting for adults was a very popular feature of the day. The outing was arranged by a committee representing all the branches of the party in Auckland, Mr. H. W. Vaughan acting as secretary s>nd organiser. During the afternoon the prizes were presented by Mr. C. G. Fellows, sports secretary. Prizes were won as follows: Impromptu Speech.—M. Dreaver, 1; W. J. Anderton and J. B. Allen, deadbeat. 2. Whistling Race. —Buckwood and Parker, Boot tlace.—Miss Bryden, 1; Miss Mu rice, 2. Sealed Handicap.—Haines, 1; Nicholls, 2. Bandsmen's Race. —Young, 1; Ford, 2. Relay Race, for teams representing branches of the party.—Birkenhead, 1; Grey Lynn, 2. 100 yds. Handicap.—Batty, 1; Taylor, 2. Thread-the-Needle Race.—Phillis and partner. Three-legged Race.—Donald and partner. Nail-Driving Competition (ladies). — Mrs. Troggott and Mrs. Purdy, dead heat. Nail-Driving Competition (men).j— Harkev, 1; Wolsh, 2.
