MELBOURNE FOOTPAD.
YOUNG WOMAN ATTACKED, A CONSTABLE WOUNDED. While pursuing a man who had attacked Miss Jean Evans, aged 27 years, of Sorrento, and demanded her money at the point of a revolver in the Domain, South Yarra, Melbourne, on a recent night, Senior-Constable A. H. McKenzie was shot. in the stomach. His assailant escaped and has not since been traced. After visiting some friends at South Yarra, Miss Evans was inakmg he. way ta, the city when she was accosted by a man whom at first she thought she knew. He asked permission to carry her bag, which contained £lO in notes. Miss Evans declined and as they were passing along the pathway in the Domain the man suddenly produced a revolver and, threatening to "blow her brains out," de manded her money. Miss Evans screamed and the man, seizing her and covering her mouth, wrested the bag from her hand. He then ran away. f Attracted by the young woman s screams, Constable McKenzie ran to tto|| scene and chased the fugitive. Upon observing the pursuit of the constable, the man turned and fired two shots, one of them striking Constable the pit of the stomach. The laan then disappeared. . . ' When the constable was examined <j the police hospital it was found that his injury was only slight, the imllet " a y] n £ evidently boen deflected l>y some ar *' c , in his pocket. jMiss Evans was troat at the hospital for abrasions to the » and severe shock. . Whon searching the Domain law? police found Miss Evans' bag with ;? £lO intact. A handbag was however, . missing. It contained about £*
