NOTES ON THE RACING. GREAT CUP VICTORY. EXCITEMENT IN LAST RACE. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON. Saturday. Star Stranger's effort in the Wellington Cup, although his 9.8 was not a record, for Advance won with 10.4, was rfeally great. The Black Demon won in 2m 84 1-sb, and Star Stringer in 2m 31s. R. Reed rode one of his best races, and fairly drove Star Stranger home. It was a great performance, and the condition of Star Stranger was a credit to J. H. Jefferd. The cup was presented to the Hon. K. S. Williams, in the absence of Mr. A. B. Williams, by the Prime Minister. Airtight won the opening event like a good horse. He always held a good position, and beat Amorist convincingly, returning a great price. Amorist did not put, much sting into his final effort, and First Sight lost any chance he might have had by getting away slowly. He was a very hot favourite. Historic was running on, | and Rotowhero, better 'ridden, should be seen to advantage later on. Amorist led out, with Flying Shot, and they led across the top from First Sight, Rotowhero and Airtight. When they turned for home Amorist failed under pressure,. Airtight coming on, to win by half a length. Amorist just beat First Sight by half a head for Becopd place, with Historic fourth a:nd Greengrocer, Rotowhero and Mandarine next. Defeat of Childsplay. Gascony was decidedly tender in front when doing his preliminary for the Well-*! ington Stakes. Paganelli drew No. 8 posi- j tion and Childsplay No. 7, but both began well, and were soon in front. Paganelli stayed on well, and his courage to-day could n°t be doubted. Prince Humphrey and Gascony both finished particularly well. Childsplay did not show her usual early brilliancy on the hard track. Golden Armour ftin a great race for a maiden hack. Staghunter's effort was very disappointing. Childsplay was a very hot fav- j ourite, with Paganelli fairly well supported. Childsplay was under pressure to go with Paganelli at the false rail, and a little further on she was beaten. PrincetHumphrey then ranged up with Paganelli and Gascony put in his appearance. Paganelli lasted long enough to beat Prince Humphrey by a neck, with Gascony half a length away third. Childsplay wa3 two lengths away, just ahead of Golden Armour and Staghunter. Lady Limond's rider really made a comedy of the Apprentices' Plate. A 51b. allowance reduced her weight to 7.1, and she left her field, but her rider rode her right out. She was too good for this field at the weights. At the same time Goshawk was a little unlucky and so jfc-as The Swell. Arikiwai ran a fair race, but Spean Bridge was not sighted. Lady Limond, of course, was favourite, with Goshawk the only other backed solidly. Lady Limond won easily. Goshawk finished on to beat The Swell by half a length for second place, and then came Arikiwai, with Blimp and Wayward next. High Disdain Wins Well. High Disdain scored a really stylish victory in the Fitzherbert Handicap, and he was always well placed. Consent was going on well, and Flicker and Goblin Market also Showed plenty of pace. Pari, Royal I)ul:e and Full Feather all stayed on well. Goblin Market was a pronounced favourite, with Moorgas best backed of the others. As they swept on to the course proper High Disdain, Bank»»t, Goblin Market, Consent, Flicker and Briar Root were showing up. High Disdain stayed on to beat Consent by half a length, with Flicker a neck tuvay third. Goblin Market was fourth and Royal Duke, Pari and Full Feather next. Star Stranger won the Wellington Cup like a champion. The effort 6f his rider, R. Reed, was one of his best, and he rode a perfect race. Pink Note stayed op in great stylo, and Set Sail was far from disgraced, for she made the running nearly all the way. Joy Bird ran a {rood race, Piuthair and Laughing Prince really had every chance, but were not good enough. Mask waa beaten at the end of a mile and a-quarter, and Bennanee faded out in the last two furlongs in a disappointing fashion. Black Mint finished last. Countersign was going on well at the end. Laughing Prince, Star Stranger, Piuthair, Mask and Set Sail were all fairly evenly backed, with the others at long prices. At the mile post Sot Sail was in front from Joy Bird, Mask, Pink' Note, Black Mint, David Garrick, Piuthair and Laughing Prince. Set Sail and uinanee turned for home clear of Joy Bird and Pink Note, with Mask, Piuthair and Laughing Prince handy. At the false rail Star Stranger came into the picture and rapidly dominated the position. Both Sec Sail and Pink Note put up obstinate resistance, and it ; was not until the last few strides that Star Stranger drew out, to beat Pink Note by a length and a-half. Set Sail was a short head away third, with' Joy Bird. Piuthair, Countersign and Laughing Prince next. j,
Another Favourite Beaten. Duke Abbey won rather, well in the Anniversary Handicap. Nincompoop ran a ifair race, and Horomea, Ring Boy and Sir Archie were all going well at the end. Le Cho.ticas was a very decided favourite, with good backing for Duke Abbey, and with Nincompoop at nearly a double-figure price to win. Le Choucas and Gala Day led at the &ix furlong post from Nincompoop and Duke Abbey, with Horomea, Damaris and Ring Boy next. So they raced right round to the turn, where Front Rank was showing up on the outside. Duke Abbey drew out to beat' Nincompoop by a length. Le Choucas being beaten into third place, a head away. Hotomea was fourth and Ring Boy, Sir Archie and Damaris in line next. Aussie found his 9.7 at the pace set too much in the Telegraph Handicap, arid he was beaten a long way from home. Paperchase stayed on particularly well down the long straight, and when she took charge the race was all over. Mon<y Order finished well, and so did Crown Area and The Hawk. The race will improve Crown Area. Aussie was a good favourite, but it was a great betting rlice. and for some unaccountable reason Papercha6e was allowed to pay a great dividend. Covent Garden and Good as Gold began best, and they led on to the course proper from .Cimabue. Crown Area. Paperchaso and Aussie. Booster was with them for three furlongs, but then he lost his rider. Paperchase came through at the false rail and soon had the early leaders in trouble. Ridden out she won by two lengths from Money Order, who beat The Hawk by a head. Grown Area was a head away foprth and then came Good as Gold, and Shirley, with Cimabue and Rascal heading the bthers. - There was a great finish in the. concluding event between Polydeotes, 'Ganymede and Broad Acre, the judge awarding a triple dead heat. Broad Acre was backed as if invincible, with Catnisador and Polydectes best backed of the others, Ganymede being at a long price. Billikins began very Smartly,' and With The Raider led to the course proper from Br<-iid Acre and Erin go Bragh. Polydectes ranged up with the leaders, who were in trouble a furlong from home, and Broad Acre hung on. Polydectes apparently had the measure of Broad Acre, and then Ganymede flashed up on the outside. It waS a desperate struggle, and the judge could not separate Polydectes, Ganymede and Broad Acre. Billikins, Addlepate, Camiaador and Bronstell were next. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. [EX TELEGRAPH. —PEES 3 ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Sunday. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Sunday. The weather promises to remain fine for the second day of the Wellington meeting to-morrow. The fields, are of a good handy size. Thurnbell will have many supporters in the Mungaroa Handicap and Golden Armour should be favourite in the Trial Plato, in which Keddar reads also particularly well. In the Nursery Handicap Goblin Market and Concentrate should both do well while Amplifier, who lost two plates yesterday, may be improved by the race. Much will depend on how the cup race has affected the Racing Club Handicap candidates but Maski Laughing Prince and Pink Note should all go well. The January Handicap is a difficult race but three who may show up are Sir Archie. Le Choucas and Damaris. Lady Limond and Goshawk in spito of their weights represent class in the Douro Cup, in which Catkin should go well. Crown. Area may bo prominent in the Metropolitan Handicap. The Hawk and Good As Gold will have friends. Starfiight and Skyquest may show up in the Camp Handicap in which Addlepate is not badly treated. WELLINGTON CUP WINNER. STAR STRANGER'S RECORD. BY PHAETON. Prior to registering his winning feat in the Wellington Cup on Saturday last Star Stranger had earned a place among noteworthy performers bred in New Zealand, but in carrying an impost, in excess of woight-for-age to victory in the ,big race at Trentham ho must be accounted to have eclipsed his previous performances, and established his prowess to a higher degree. In a review of Star Stranger's career, the interesting fact is established that he was not called upon to run his first race in hi 3 two-year-old days until January 1, and further that only four races were exacted from him ip his youthful days. The considerate treatment meted out to the big son of Martian in his youthful days bore good fruit, for his name is enrolled among winners of the Great Northern Derby, and though there was no tendency to elevate him very highly at that stage of his career, the prediction was offered in many quarters that he might be expected to carry his record much higher. As is well known Star Stranger endorsed that prediction, for at four-years-old he won the Metropolitan Stakes run over a mile and five furlongs at the Australian Jockey Club's Meetui& m the spring of 1926. Later on he established a fresh record (2m 17sj lor a mile and three furlongs when he won the Wellington Rac ing Club's Handicap under 9.5. At five year-old Star Stranger demonstrated that ho possessed the staying Quality which is a marked characteristic of the descendants of Martian, for in the decision of the New Zealand Cup he carried 9.4 into second plac# behind Rapier, conceding the latter 18lb. At Ellerslie last month he won the A.R.C. Handicap under 9.4, in attractive style, and oa that performance he was. widely rogarded as a horse likely to earn winning honours in the Wellington Cup. As the mile and a-half attached to the Trentham race wa3 'compassed in 2m 31s pointed evidence is forthcoming that there was no loitering on the road in Saturday a race. Up to date Star Stranger has contested 45 races, and his record stands as follows; UnFirst. Second. Third, placed. At 2 years •> 0 1 1 2 At 3 years >.6 6 2 5 At 4 years ~2 3 1 4 At 5 years i.. 3* 2 1 6
11 12 5 17 ♦lncluding a dead-heat; Star Stranger was bred by* Mr. C. J. Toxward. from whom he was purchased privately by Mr. A. B. Williams. The son of Martian has proved a goad speculation to the Hawke's Bay sportsman for his winnings in stakes amount to £14,512. ' , The leading lines in the pedigree of star Stranger jead as follows; — Sire: Martian, by Martagon (3on of Bend Or) from Otterdcn, by Sheen (son ox Hampton) from Springmorn, by Springfield (son of St. Albans). Dam: Star Lady, by Demosthenes (son of Desmond) from Lady Lucy, by Seaton Delaval (son of Melton) from Hilda, by Musket (son of Toxopholite). NGAIIUAWAHIA RACES. STAR COMET WINS CUP. BAY OF ISLANDS MEETING. RARAKAU WINS CUP. DAVE SCORES AGAIN. : Dull weather with a few scattered showers was experienced for the Bay of Islands Racing Club's Meeting at Kawakawa on Saturday, but there was a good attendance. The track had dried a good deal from Thursday and the going was considerably improved. Six favourites were successful and most of the winners were at short prices. The principal event, the Kawakawa Cup, was won by the favourite, Rarakau, who scored very comfortably from Pita. The Northland Counties Handicap was annexed by W'aning Light, and after the race the gold cup donated by Mrw C. H. Puttick was presented to her trainer, T. Bezar, who received it on behalf of Mr. A. Robinson, by the Hon. V. H. Reed, M.L.C. The judicial committee was called together to consider a couple of incidents in connection with the Taoing, The first concerned the handling of Roman Abbey, who finished second in the Ohaewai High-weight Handicap. There was no evidence to show that the horso had not been ridden out and the committee considered that the rider, H. Dulieu, had committed an error of judgment. It was decided to is»ue a warning. For intereference with Wee Marble in the Russell Handicap, J. Ray, rider of Corinax, was also before the committee, but his explanation .was accepted and no action taken. The totalisator handled .£9235, compared with £8369 10s last year, the investments thus showing an increase of £865 10s. The results were;— ' HOKIANGA HANDICAP. Of £55 ;. 6 fur. 2—GAY COCKADE, H. P. CANTERBURY GOSSIP. QUIET TIME AT RICCARTON. LIMERICK WORKING WELL. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Sunday. After a very quiet experience during the Christmas and New Year holidays, while local horses were racing in other parts of the Dominion, the Riccarton tracks became livelier when the tourists reached home. The busy period did not last long, however, and once more there is very little excitement. The cause on this occasion is the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which has attracted nearly thirty horses from Riccarton stables. Until they return at the end of next week there will not be a great deal of interest in tho work, although the horses remaining at home will be moving along steadily with a view to other meetings to be held next month. Starshooter, a two-year-old brother to Starflight, by Archery from Stardancer, has been getting through a lot of useful work lately. He may be a member of G. Murray Ayndley'a team for Wingatui, where he has an engagement in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. The three-year-old Arikiwai ha 3 done all his racing over short courses so < far, but I?. D. Jones is very hopeful that he will develop into a stayer. In support of that idea he has put Arikiwai in the Dunedin Cup. Limerick is bowling along very freely in sprinting tasks. He will have a race in the Hazlett Memorial Plate at the Dunedin meeting next month when he should be at his best. He will then bo shipped to Sydney in search of more weight-for-age honours. It will be no surprise if he is a better horse on this trip than at any previous stage of his career. H. Nurse is keeping Rapier at steady tasks. At present he has no immediate engagements so there is no need to bustle him and he is in such good order that he can be at his best again with a few gallops. He may have his next race in the Trenthapi Gold Cup. Centrepiece has developed trouble which has necessitated veterinary attention and he has been thrown out of work for the. present. It ia a form of paralysis aSectmg one of his legs and a good spell will J)e necessary even if it develops into nothing more serious.
