OUTBREAK IN BRITAIN. COMPENSATION TOTALS £IOI,OOO. Sun. LONDON. Deo. 31. It is estimated that the £27,800 just incurred as compensation for the slaughter of animals suffering from foot and mouth disease will bring the total payment for the year to £IOI,OOO. As a result of the further spread of the disease in Nottinghamshire, the Minis try of Agriculture has ordered the destruction of Colonel Birkin's pedigree herd of Friesia.ns, Guernseys and Shorthorns, which took 11 years to build lip. Special precautions are being taken to protect the Prince of Wales' pedigree stock at Lenton Farm, six miles distant. The Times says that although the position is serious, only 64 outbreaks of ithe disease have occurred in Britain, compared with 16,000 outbreaks on the Continent.
