PITCHED BATTLE FOUGHT. A. and N.Z. SHANGHAI, Dec. 31. The. holidays were marred by a renewed crime wave, with foreign and Chinese victims. A pitched battle occurred outside the international settlement between a band of 80 armed robbers and Chinese volunteer police. There were 30 casualties, five armed robbers and one British policeman being killed, - A British harbour ferry was visited by pirates in broad daylight. Five foreigners who were on board were robbed and a factory pay-roll was looted. Two attempts to kidnap children wore frustrated.
