COLLISION ON RAILWAY.
ACCIDENT Air REMUERA. JiNGI ME STRIKES GOODS TRAIN SEVERAL TRUCKS DERAILED. GUARD SLIGHTLY INJURED. A collision between a mixed goods train iind an unattached engine, both southbound, occurred between Newmarket, and Rsmuera stations 12.45 p.m. yesterday, several empty trucks "being derailed, blocking ths ontward line for is£ hours. No on© was injured, the guard of ihe train escaping with slight cuts und abrasions. There was no delay to traffic, the accident occurring at a slack period in the day when the single lir.6 available was sufficient for all trains both ways. The goods train, which was bound for Mercer, was ascending the incline* toward Remuera station just above the ovarbridge at St. Mark's Road wheti the unattached engine, of ihe heavy -Alt express typo, crashed into the reair; of the guard's van. The guard, Mr. D * Hassettj who resides at Mercer, was in his compartment at the back: of thus van, but escaped serious injury, receiving only cats to the head and a slight injury to the left shoulder and arvc. The back of the van was completely wrecked, the flooring being forced tipwards and the back platform and rear bogey being severely damaged. Milk cans were thrown on to the track and glass and splinters of woodwork 'were hurled in all directions. The next three trucks, of the closed refrigerator type, together with tho van, remained on the line, but were slightly telescoped, the connections being pushed inwards, bursting the floor f. The three trucks immediately in front of these were derailed, beirtg pushed sideways into the stone embankment supporting bhe down track. The connecting and brake gear was smashed and tha bodywork wits slightly splintered, All the damaged waggons were empty, The engine which collided with the train was only slightly damaged and was afterwards used to assist the breakdown gang to clear the line. Shortly after the accident a party of workmen arrived from Newmarket and started to jack the waggons en the line, a task of considerable* difficulty. The line was fini&lly cleared for through traffic at 4.15 p.m., there being practically no damagij to the permanent way. The front portion of the goods train, which was a fairly long one, finally left "Remaerg after a delv of about an hour.
