WAIHEKE ANNUAL .REGATTA. INTERESTING CONTESTS. CLOSE FINISHES RECORDED. . T:he annua] rega'ita promoted "by the resi-' dents of Waiheke was held at Cowes Bay yesterday. The weather was very favourable, a light north-easterly breeze prevailing. A large number of yachts and launches was anchored in the bay and the steamer Ngatiawa arrived from Auckland with a full complement of excursionists. A scow was used aa flagship and was anchored off the wharf, air the races starting anil finishing between the flagship and the wlfcrf. With the exception of the race for 2frfooters good entries were received, and for t!d<> first time for several years a race was held for keel yachts, The, officials an charge of the rsclng were: Starter and judge, Mr. E. Day; limelceeper, Mr. T. Weir; recorder, Mr. N. B. Scantlebury; side-show officials, Messrs. W. J. Connell, E. Day, J. Mclvenzie and S. 'Weir. Details aro as follows: The race for settlers' launches brought out five starters, which were led over the line by Linnett, closely followed by Countess anfli Agnes. The finishing times were: Agnes (scr), llh 16m 455; Countess (Bni), llh 22ni 455; Linnett (8m), llh 22m 555; Lola (9m), llh 25m 12s: Miss Waiheke (17m), llh 37ai 20s. The race for centreboard boats, 22ft. and under, brought out sis competitors, all c>£ wiiicn got away within a few seconds of gunfire, Mirage being slightly ahend of Maiie and Venus. On the lead to tfa.j .first mark Milage and Marie slightly increased thej.r lead from Venus and the others._ On the beat, down the Pcnui shore Marie passed Mirage and was never again headed. The wind fell light at timeu and Venus and Mowai, whicli stood out, lost time to the ■other boats, which worked inside the Rotoroa reefs out of the tide. Off Pakatoa Mirage struck it patchy for a while, £tid was passed by Venus and Aurora. The finishing times wore: Marie (sci), lh lm sif; Venus (scr), lh 3m; Aurora -(scr), lh 7m 50s; Mirage (scr), lh 8m lOsi; Wyoming (14m), lh 9m 30s; Mowai (6m)* lh 13m 52a. Result: Wyoming, 1; Marie, 2. Venus, 3. There were six competitors in the race for 18ft. boats, 4 Manene, Wild. Wave arid Secret crossing the line togethsi:, closely followed, by the other boats. Wild Wave established a big lead at the Pukatoa mark, but was overhauled by Maneni', on the run to the finishing line.
