PICKPOCKETS DEPORTED
AUSTRALIANS SENTENCED. " THREE BAD CHARACTERS." BAN PLACED ON RETURN. Three Australians, described as professional pickpockets, Albert Yeran, aged 30, carpenter, William Stone, aged 27, hawker, and Norman Burgess, aged 34, wood-machinist, appeared for sentence in the Police Court yesterday. Veran and Burgess were charged with attempting to steal £1 from an unknown person and * with being idle and disorderly. Stone was alleged to have consorted with reputed thieves. " These men are all crack Australian pickpockets who came to Auckland from Sydney to follow their calling, through carnival woek," said Chief-Detective Cummings. " They all have lists, and are bad characters." The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, ordered the accused to leave the country by the steamer which sailed for Sydney yesterday, and convicted and directed them to be brought up i'or sentence if they set foot in New Zealand within two years. " We do not want you here," he remarked. " Fortunately, you were caught before you did any real harm.'' L
