DECISION OF GOVERNMENT. SUM OF £400,000 GRANTED. (Received December 22, 9.38 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON. Dpc. 22. In the House of Lords the Lord Privy Seal, the Marquess of Salisbury, stated that with regard to the Irish tenants the Government had decided that the absolute maximum sum payable to the tenanfs would be £400,000, although the total recommended by the Grants Committee was largely in excess of this sum. The Government had now decided to pay the first £SO of all the awards in full, 50 per cent, of any excess up to £IOOO, and thereafter to pay 30 per cent, of the award. The money would be paid forthwith. The total award was £625,000, which was £225,000 in excess of the original maximum.
