NEW MAGISTRATE.

CHOICE OF AUCKLANDER, POST FOR MR. S. L. PATERSON. ASSISTANT CROWN SOLICITOR. Mr. S. L. Paterson, well known as assistant-Crown Solicitor in Auckland during the last six years, has been appointed a stipendiary magistrate to fill a vacancy in the Auckland Province. He will commence duties on February 1. Mr. Paterson has had wide experience in Court procedure, dealing with the criminal side in his capacity as prosecutor, and the civil aspect as counsel in both the Magistrate's Court and the Supreme Court. He was born in Napier in 1892, his father, the late Mr. Logan Paterson, being a railway inspector. Mr. Paterson's family moved to Christchurch when he was about four years of age, and he received his early education at the Addington public school. Later he attended the Christchurch Boys' High School. A keen cricketer, he represented his college in the first match for the Heathcote Williams Shield, played against the Auckland Grammar School about 1910. Mr. Paterson spent three months in journalism with the Lyttelton Times, and when 19 years of age he entered the legal office of Cunningham and Taylor. Subsequently he was employed by Elmore and Banash, of Rangiora. ' He obtained his degree as Bachelor of Law at Canterbury College in 1916; and immediately joined the 2nd Wellington Battalion. Before leaving for France he was admitted to the Bar by Mr. Justice Denniston. Returning to New Zealand in 1918, Mr. Paterson entered the employ of the Auckland firm of Nicholson and Gribbin. He was afterwards with Jackson, Russell, Tunks and Ostler, and about the end of 1918 he established the partnership of Mckenzie and Paterson. In 1921 he joined Mr. V. R. Meredith, Crown solicitor. Mr. Paterson was married in 1923 to Miss Beatrice Brendel, of the staff of the Epsom Girls' Grammar School, a granddaughter of the late Archdeacon Maunsell.
