FEWER SCHOOL CHILDREN.

A BIG LONDON REDUCTION.

A census of London elementary school children taken in April last disclosed a reduction on the previous enumeration, taken in 1925, of 30,289, the totals being 766,860. and 797,149 respectively. Commenting on the figures, the attendance subcommittee of the Education Committee state that the decrease is due to the decline in the birth-rate and to the migration of families to housing estates beyond thfc county, with little or no counterbalancing inflow. In the post-war years qp to 1925 migration beyond the county was not reflected to a large extent in the scheduling figures. The total for 1927 is, however, about 10,000 less than might have been expected on a consideration of the effect pf the birth-rate alone," and this indicates the effect of migration to the new housing estate's beyond the county.
