DEVONPORT INTERESTS.
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES. The Devonport Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. E. Ald- ► ridge, presiding. Mr. T. Walsh, who was elected this week, took his seat. The Public Works Department notified that a further subsidy of one pound for one pound up to £7O had been granted for unemployment relief work at O'Neill's Point Cemetery. It was decided to have spent oxide used on the paths in order to combat weeds. A further Government subsidy of £463 has been granted for relief work on the Stanley Bay Reserve. Mr. A. Harris, M.P., wrote stating that a clause would bo included in the "washing-up" bill dealing with the Pacific Cable Board's depot in Queen's Parade. A Government subsidy of £543 had been granted in connection with the reclamation work. The state of the footpath in Waterview Road was the subject of much discussion. It was decided the engineer should take the matter in hand. A protest against the formation of a drain in connection with tho Stanley Bay Reserve was received from the Stanley Bay School Committee. It was pointed out the drain would create a grave danger to the small children attending the school. The cost of fencing-in tho canal was estimated at about £3OO and it was decided the council could not afford to have the work done.
