VALUELESS CHEQUES USED.
TWO GASES AT WHANGAREI. ONE MAN SENT TO PRISON. [BY TEUEOKAI'JI. —OWN COWtESI'OJCDENT. ] WHANGAREI, Monday. A sentence of six months' imprisonment was imposed on Allan Lionel Vivian by Mr. F„ 11. Levien, S.M., .to-day for fraudujently obtaining £3 4s 6d i;y means of a valueless cheque. The. police stated that an account had been opened by accused in New Plymouth with a deposit of £6. lie had presented a number of cheques on this account, the last being one for £6 in payment of a bill for board. From this accused had received the change specified in the change.
W. Martin, a native music teacher, was chnrged with obtaining £3 10s by means of a valueless cheque from H. C. Dawson, of the Hikurangi Hotel. Accused elected to be dealt with summarily and pleaded gnilty. Senior-Sergeant Waterman, who conducted the prosecution, said that accused opened an account at a bank by depositing £2 Sine/ 1 then he had issued 22 cheques amounting to £43, but had only paid in a total of £24, the excess of withdrawals over deposit being £l9. In extenuation accused said he expected to collect money from two pupils at the time, he presented the cheque to .Dawson. Only one of the pupils had paid, with the result there was a shortage and the cheque was not honoured. The bank manager had told him that the account was unsatisfactory and must be closed, lie had done this. The magistrate remarked that accused had a long record of the same typo of offences and he would take time to consider the sentence. Accused would be brorght before him again to-morrow.
