BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN.
ANOTHER LADY MEMBER. THE COUNTESS OF IVEAGH. HUSBAND'S SEAT WON. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received November 20, 11 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. Nov. 19. The by-election for Southend-on-Sea, caused by the sitting member, Viscount Elveden, succeeding to tho title of Earl of Iveagh, resulted in the election jf his wife, the Countess of Iveagh, retaining the seat for the Government. Tho result of the election was:— Lady Iveagh (Conservative) 21,221 Dougall Weston (Liberal) . . 11,912 J. Harper (Labour)'.. .. 4,777 E. Hailwood (Independent) . . 917 The Countess of Iveagh was formerly Lady Gwendolen Onslow, eldest daughter of the fourth Earl of Onslow, a former Governor of New Zealand. The election of the countess follows tho example of Viscountess Astor, who became the Conservative member of' Parliament for Plymouth on the accession of her husband, Viscount Astor, to the peerage; of Mrs. Wintringham, who was Liberal member for tho South Division of Lincolnshire, 1921-24, in place of her husband, who died in 1921; and of Mrs. Hilton Philipson. who was the actress,^Mabel Russell, and who, as a Conservative, successfully contested tho Berwick-upon-Tweed seat which her husband lost in 1923 owing to a technical irregularity in his election. At the last general election the voting at Southend was:—Viscount Elveden (Conservative), 23,417; J. D. Young (Liberal), 10,924; S. A. Moseley (Labour), 3144.
