CYCLING GRAND PRIX.
NEW ZEALAND TEAM LEADS. THIRD STAGE OF RACE. (Received November 17, 11.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Nov. 17. In the race for the cycling Grand Prix, from Bendigo to Warrnambool (132 miles) the New Zealand team retains the lead. There were 43 riders who continued to-day. Oppermari was defeated for the sprint prizes Ballarat to Castlemaine, by Jehir, of Geelong, who led at Castlemaine. Watson (New Zealand) punctured a tyre at 50 miles, but Rennie (New Zealand) was well up in the early stages. At Ballarat (78 miles) Bainbridge (Victoria' was first, Watson eighth, and 21 miles farther on Watson had reached third place. At 129 miles the order was:—Opperman, Watson, Bainbridge, Osborn. The riders were close together. A heavy head wind is delaying them. The race is expected to finish at seven this evening. The riders are feeling the effects of the contest, and their progress is slow.
