PARKING OF MOTORS.

" NOSING-IN " IN BROADWAY. CRITICISM OF THE BY-LAW. LITTLE ROOM TO MANOEUVRE. Some of Auckland's motorists expressed surprise yesterday at the Newmarket Borough Council's decision to enforce parking at an angle to the kerb in Broadway. It is the general opinion that there is no latitude in Broadway for manoeuvring vehicles into the close formation suggested. The Borough Council debated at some length on thi relative merits of "nosingin" and "backing in" to the kerb, but the view taken by some motorists is that either method will only have the effect of packing still more traffic into the already over-packed thoroughfare. The opinion of most drivers is that Broadway's traffic density is such that angle parking and the consequent extrication involved is no more aplicable than it would be in Queen Street. It is. pointed out that an expert driver can demonstrate the convenience of angle parking very conclusively unless one of the great majority of merely competent motor : sts rams his vehicle as it backs and fills in the maze of congestion. Parking such as the projected by-law will enforce it found only on secondary thoroughfares elsewhere in New Zealand. It certainly doubles the capacity of the thoroughfare for standing cars, but the Newmarket Borough Council is the first authority to apply it in a "bottle-neck." The customary method of dealing with the parking problem has been to reduce the standing time limit and keep vehicles on the move. The operation of the radical system in Broadway will bo watched by traffic authorities with great interest. If it is as safe as it is convenient, it will prove very popular with shopping motorists.
