METHODS OF DISTRIBUTION.
| The arrival of the Port Hardy at the [explosives anchorage off Motuihi on ! 1 hursday draws attention to the fact that the whole of the explosives usod in New Zealand, with the exception of supplies for mining purposes, arrive at Auckland by ocean steamers from England. During the course of the ysar, over 1200 tons of explosives arrive in consignments varying from 100 to 400 tons, and are transhipped at the anchorage to the schooners of the Nobel Explosive Company, which supplies the whole of the explosives used in New Zealand. Three schooners are engaged in the trade, the Huia, the Piri and the. Miro. These vessels convey the cargoes taken on board at the Auckland anchorage to magazines situated at the chief New Zealand ports. Auckland supplies are unloaded at the magazine at Maraetai.
Ihe schooners are also engaged in bringing tho supplies of special blasting explosive used fii the coalmining industry fiotn Australia, whore it is manufactured in tho company's works. These supplies, which are classified as "permitted explosives, are taken direct to the magazines at Auckland, Westport, Greymouth and Dunedin.
Ihe New Zealand consumption of explosives is approximately equal to that of Victoria. It is exceeded by that- of New South Wales and Western Australia, the latter State being the heaviest user of the commodity in Australia.
