THE AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION.

PROPOSAL TO ENGAGE COACH.

The monthly meeting of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association was held last evening, the president. Mr. E. Hickson, presiding. The president reported on the meeting of the outer-suburban association to discuss the question of inter-club matches and stated that trophies had been presented for this competition by Messrs. Morpeth and Kohn. The Manukau Association hdd also offered a shield. It was decided to thank the donors. A letter was read from Mr. G. Fleming, one of the guarantors of the art union, thanking the association for the gift of an order for £lO, and stating he would iike it utilised in purchasing a trophy for competition. Each guarantor was made a similar gift. It was decided to act in accordance with Mr. Fleming's wishes. 'J?he following clubs were granted affiliation:—Papakura, Kgataringa and Itawhiti. It was decided to write to the Opotiki Club, pointing out that the Bay of Plenty Association was not affiliated to the New Zealand Association, and that if Opotiki broke away from Auckland its members would be unable to play in matches oanotioned by that body. The resignation of the Grammar School Ciub was accepted. An application from the Eotorua Ciub for the holding of its tournament on December 2fi, 27 and 28. was received. It will bo forwarded to the New Zealand Association. On the motion of Mr. E. Griffiths, it was decided to ask the clubs to forward a list of defaulters to the secretary. It was decided that no challengea for ladder positions should be allowed before November I. and that no player should Le called on to plnv matches Before November 20. It was decided to limit the number of teams entered by any club in the inter-club competitions to five. A committee consisting of Messrs. Hickson. G. L. Taylor. Griffiths, J. Ohlson and H. G. Thomson, was set up to go into the question of obtaining a coach for the association. On Mr. 1). G. Macfarlane'a motion it was decided to elect a ball-testing committee of five to make recommendations to the annual meeting as to the ball to be adopted bv the association. The following were elected .-—Messrs. T. Clay. C. C. Chalmers, A. W. Sims, Griffiths and Hickson. The following were elected members of a grounds committee for the association courts at Stanley Street: —Messrs. V. R. .Tohns, A. C. Johns. C. C. Chalmers. V. N. Hubblo and A. Campbell. Mr. F. J. Ohlson reported that the com mittee appointed to go into the question of junior tennis had circularised the various schools and it was hoped to have replies l.y November 14. when a meeting would he held.
