WORK AT STANLEY BAY PARK. SUBSIDY TO BE GRANTED. [by telegraph.—special REPORTER. J WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The payment of a subsidy of £1 for £l, up to £585, has been authorised by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, for unemployment relief works which are to be carried out by the Devohport Borough Council at Stanley Bay Park, The council's original application for a subsidy had to be refused by the Minister, as the proposals did not provide for at least 60 per cent, of the money to be spent being used for the payment of labour, as required by the legislation which authorises the payment of the subsidies. Since then the matter has been gone into by Mr. A. Harris, member for Waitemata, the Borough Council, and tho Stanley Bay Committee, and fresh proposals have been submitted which provide for more than 60 per cent, of the money being paid for labour. The estimated cost of the modified work is £ll7O, and it is on this figure that the Minister has approved the subsidy up to £585. The subsidy is payable immediately. The Auckland City Council has also offered the sum of £3OO out of it!j unemployment relief fund for work on tlie park, conditional on the amount carrying the subsidy of £1 for £l. Application for the subsidy is being pressed by Mr. Harris, but the matter has not reached finality. It is expected that an early decision will be reached.
