MOUNT EDEN RATES.
Sir,—A gentleman who signs as ''Progress" has some remarks to make on rating in your issue of the 27th inst. I do not know, his name or his property, and cannot, therefore, reply in detaiL I would say, however, that in Mount Eden vacant sections have commonly been rated at their value for selling. There has been a contention that . sections which earned nothing should be valued at a small amount, but as they are merely hel<F for a rise there is no justification for such a method. The improvements that are made add to the value of the property and the vacant section should contribute fairly toward the cost of them. Moreover, to value these sections at the price asked for them does away with much of the argument for rating on unimproved values. It is possible that "Ratepayer No. 2," who writes in the same issue is also holding for a rise. S. Gray.
