PIDDINGTON INQUIRY.
HEAVY COSTS INVOLVED, EXPENDITURE OVER £SOOO. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY, Oct. 27. In a reference to the recent Royal Commission which inquired into charges made against the Industrial Commissioner, Mr. A. B. Piddington, the Premier, Mr. T. R. Bavin said the taxpayers in New South Wales had had to pay over £SOOO for the purpose of a public inquiry which was quite unnecessary, as it served no public purpose of any importance whatever. The chairman of the commission was pafd 50 guineas a day for 23 days, a total *of £1207 10s. The other commissioners received 40 guineas a day each, and other legal fees paid by the Crown amounted to over £2OOO.
