BRITISH BETTING TAX.

BENEFIT TO TREASURY. WIDOWS* PENSIONS BALANCED. (British Official "Wireless.) (Received October 27, 6.12 p.m.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY. Oct. 26. In the course of a speech last evening the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Churchill, said the Treasury would this year receive £3,000,000 or £4,000,000 from the betting tax. He knew of no great national interest which had suffered in consequence. The attendances had not fallen off at the big race meetings because of the tax, and the prices realised at the bloodstock sales had surpassed all previous records in every instance. The money realised would almost exactly equal the amount which the Government had to provide to establish a universal system of widows' pensions for the whole year.
