THEFT OF LEAD PIPING.
FURTHER CHARGES PENDING. Stating there were 10 other similar charges pending, Chief-Detective Cummings asked in the Police Court yesterday that William James Smith, aged 23, and Claude Fox, aged 19, who admitted two charges of stealing £6 10s worth of lead piping, should be remanded to appear on November 3. The remand was granted. The Rev. Jasper Caider, on behalf of accused, said he would not ask for their release on bail as he thought it better that they should remain in prison for the period of the remand. Pleading guilty to a charge of obtaining goods and money, totalling £3, by means of a valueless cheque, John George Woodward, nc;ed 50, said lie had been out of work. "He is a married man and he issued the cheque from his wife's old cheque book," said Chief-Detective Cummings. Accused was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
