TRAMS VERSUS BUSES.
Sir,— According to a statement published in the Tramway and Railway World, May 12, 1927, Mr. Grothwell, a German engineer who was instructed by the German Government to visit London and New York with a view of investigating transport, is of the opinion that the omnibus is merely a pleasure vehicle, rather than a serious and helpful adjunct to urban transportation. One look at London's tangle of omnibuses cured him of anv desire to expand omnibus facilities in Berlin. Neither in London nor New York had the omnibus demonstrated its ability to handle mass transportation. At present omnibuses account for only 5 per cent, of Berlin s traffic, and it is proposed to leave proportions at that figure. In giving evidence at s Royal Commission, Mr. Frank Pick, assistant managing director of General Omnibus Company, stated that between the hours of S a.m. and 5 p.m. turns grating between Strand and Fleet Street were subject to 1581 hold-nps. This all goes to show that the policy of Auckland City Council is a sound one, and that the much-criticised Motor Regulation ß Act was essential. Jobs GuiNira.
