WELFARE OF ORPHANS.
PRESBYTERIAN WORK. A YEAR OF PROGRESS. The annual meeting of the Auckland Presbyterian Orphanages and Social Service Association was held in St. Andrew's Hall last evening, the Rev. J. A. Thomson presiding in the absence, through illness, of the Rev. Frazer B. Barton, moderator of the Auckland Presbytery. The chairman said no meeting ir. con-' nection with the Church's activities was of more importance and the Presbyterian Church had a large burden of the social work of New Zealand, as it was the second largest church in the Dominion. He stressed the responsibility oi the Church in the work among the orphans. Reference to the added benefits received through the- amalgamation of the various orphanages under the charge of one superintendent was made by Mr. S. J. Harbutt, chairman of the general committee of the association. The annual reports showed that the past year had been one of activity and progress. Unforuniately debit balances were recorded on the year's work, the deficiency, being largely caused through the increase in the cost of maintenance. A concert programme was given by all the children of the orphanages, following the conclusion of the meeting. Good progress is being made with the newlyformed drum and fife band at the Boys' Home. Onehunga. A fine set of drums and £IOO were recently given to the l tome fey the Auckland P l P® Band, which J wad now dissolved.
