VALUELESS CHEQUES.
MAORI OBTAINS GOODS. TWO CHARGES ADMITTED. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Monday. A young Maori, Hui Kai Rehu, who is also known as Kai Thompson, pleaded guilty in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day to two charges of obtaining money and goods valued at £SO by means of valueless cheques. Evidence was given that accused purchased a pair of boots in a Hamilton shop on September 30, and, in payment, tendered a cheque for £2O. The cheque was taken immediately to the bank, and was dishonoured, there being no account thfire in accused's name. A Frankton storekeeper slated that accused called on him on September 30, and represented that he was one of a party of contractors. Goods to the value of £3O were ordered, and accused made a cheque out for the account. The cheque was not met at the bank. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. He was remanded to appear at Te Awamutu on a false pretences charge, and it was stated other charges were pending in the Taranaki district.
