BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.

THE SEWERAGE SCHEME, The Birkenhead Borough Council met on Wednesday evening, the DeputyMayor, Mr. A. Kadfield, presiding. A communication from Dr. H. Chesson, Medical Officer of Health, expressed pleasure that a scheme for the sewerage of the borough was under consideration, and fie offered all possible assistance in the matter. There should be only one outfall, and the septic tank placed in such a position as to allow of the discharge of the effiusnt into water of reasonable depth at low tide. It was unfortunate that in the past a scheme was not evolved to deal with the drainage of the northern boroughs, as a whole, with provision for a single outfall for the North Shore, instead of the separate outfallr for each borough, as at present. Such a combined scheme was at the present time, however, hardly practicable, but no doubt in the future something would be done to link up all four systems. It would be well, when designing the Birkenhead scheme, to nave this possibility in view, so that in the future it would not be necessary to scrap the main portion of the borough's sewers when this ideal scheme eventuated. It was decided the members of the council should attend the combined meeting of the four North Shore borough councils next Monday evening, when the Waitakere scheme will -be explained on behalf of the North Shore Water Board. The waterworks engineer reported that 2,650,000 gallons of water had been used during the past month. The surface of Lake Takapuna was 3in. higher than a month ago. being 2ft. 9in. above higntide level. The Birkenhead Lodge of Buffaloes forwarded a donation of £5 5s toward the relief of local unemployed. Two permits for new buildings were granted. The Northcote Borough Council intimated it could not agree to sharing the cost of an expert's report on the suggested combined fire brigade scheme, except as already indicated. No action was taken, the communication being formally received.
