REFORM INTERESTS SUPPORTED
INDUSTRY AND FINANCE
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TUAKAU, Friday. " I am standing entirely On my Own," said Mr, W. J. Taylor, Independent Rcform candidate for Haglan, in opening his campaign this evening before an audience of about 200 persons in the Tuakuu Public Hall. The speaker stated ho had come forward in tho interests of the Heform Party. Of paramount importance in the qualifications of a candidate was youth, said Mr. Taylor. In the lobby of tho House of Representatives the Reform Parly was rapidly assuming the nature of an old men's club, while the ranks of the Opposition were composed largely of youtlg and virile men. He considered the Prime Minister a strong matt, but thought lie had too many weak men with him. Mr. Coates' policy was right, but was being carried out in the wrong way. Mr. Taylor stated that he favoured maintaining the robust Imperialism that had marked New Zealand to date. He considered the Singapore base necessary. Preference should bo given to British goods, but local industry should be given protection where necessary. Dairy control should be given a better trial, cheap manures made available, and cheap money provided for the extension of State advances. Local body loans for metalling rural roads should be automatically subsidised by the Government. The candidate considered Highways Board money could best be spent by local bodies, who were familiar with local conditions and Could save the overhead expenses incurred by having a Highways Board.
After referring to various questions Mr. Taylor said lie did not favour Bible reading in schools until the teachers should also favour it, He thought the Arbitration Court should be composed of three Supreme Court judges.
A motion proposed by Mr. J. C. Ley, pledging the meeting to work to secure the return of Mr. Taylor, was carried unanimously.
