BREEDING OF PIGS.

IMPORTATION. OF ANIMALS

REMOVAL OF PROHIBITION.

[BY telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Pig breeders in New Zealand have for some "time past been faced with considerable difficulty in obtaining new blood for their herds, owing to importations from their usual sources of supply having been prohibited because of the existence of certain diseases in the countries from which stud pigs we r e usually introduced when a change of blood was deemed advisable. In view of this and of the growing importance of the export trade in pig products from the Dominion, th# Minister of Agriculture, Hon. O. J. Hawken, has given careful consideration to the needs of breeders and as a result he has decided to allow during the next few months the importation of pigs from Canada, subject lo the following conditions {l} The written consent of the Min ister of Agriculture must be obtained before each shipment is m&de. Applica us for such consent must give foil particulars of the proposed to be im ported, of the probable date of shipment and of the owner's name and locality of he farm from which the pigs are to be obtained, in order that full inquiry may be made before consent is given. (2) If permit is granted it will be subject to the tihipjwr in Canada giving a statutory declaration that the animals have been in Canada from birth, that they been free from all contagious disease for six months, and that have not been m direct or indirect contact with any infected livestock for six months. They must aiso be accompanied by a certificate from a qualified veterinarian in a form to be prescribed and on arrival in New Zealand will be held at one of the island quarantine stations of the Department of Agriculture for 40 days. An Orde-in-Councii giving effect to this decision will be gazetted shortly. The Minister hopes that great benefit to the industry will result from this opportunity for breeders to obtain a complete change of blood for their herds.
