EMPIRE BROADCAST.

BREAKDOWN OF APPARATUS. pafit of programme sent. A. and N.Z.-Sun. I ONDON. rep*- 11. When Mr. Gerald Marcuse, the Caterham wireless amateur, sent oat his first Empire broadcast to-day, a party of 50 Australians in a graphophone studio watched the microphone, wondering whether the broadcast would reach Australia. Then came a tragic breakdown. The condenser suddenly failed, which caused a generator to blow out. and the plant, which hitherto had stood the severest tests, was silent for 50 minutes. It was something of an achievement that Mr. Marcuse and his two assistants managed to rig up an emergency supply from the public mains, but it necessitated the reduction of liho programme by half. As all the items were picked up by valve sets in the South of England there are strong hopes that most of the items got through. Mr. Marcuse is undismayed at the mishap, and he says he will continue his pioneering work, and is sanguine of ultimate success.
