BRIGHTER PROSPECTS AHEADI t *- • - , '•* 1' i [BY TKLEG RA Prf. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. Jv HT7APAI,' Monday,'":* The Huapai Fruitgrowers' Co-operative-Society, Limited, held its annual meet-, ing on Saturday. There was a fair attendance of growers and Mr. J. A.-Lamb* - den presided. < I The report stated that the society's chain of retail apple shops in- Auckland was proving of benefit to growers, who* were assured of payable prices for their; fruit. The directors brought forward proposals fof the coming season's 'policy,, which provided for the continuance of the retail shops and the provision of facilities I for co-operative export by members;? all: ! fruit for both shops and export .to . ha ! graded and packed at the society's grading ! store in the city, with the exception cf | export fruit, which individuals might j prefer to pack at home.. These proposals met "Hth the unanimous approval of the meeting. | Of the retiring directors Messrs Lambden (chairman), Rodger, Bnll and K. G. Warren were reappointed, while Mr. G. E. Nalder was elected to fill the seat formerly held by Mr. J. H. McKinlay, who was appointed to the position of secretary. Several new fruitgrowers have recently settled in the district, and there is a | general tendency to improvement o! cultural, manuring , and spraying methods, which the chairman said could not but enhance the reputation of the district. The opinion was expressed that the industry as a whole was gradually emerging from its period of adversity and' that brighter prospects, were appearing in both export and local market. TRADE NAME " ZELANDIA," ■ .. ! ir; . : "• /;• USE BY THE ARGENTINE. EXPLANATION OF ORIGIN. The views of the Argentine Dairy , Association upon the protests which have been made against the use of the trade nama "Zelandia," which it has been suggested confuses South American with New Zealand dairy produce, have been conveyed to Mr. F. S. Battley, Argentine Vice-Consul at Auckland, by the association. It is poiiited out that the name, a Dutch one, was registered many years ago, and for a long period "Zelandia" has been the brand under which S. A Elqwson and Wester, Ltd., have been, selling dairy produce. The chairman of that company, is vice-chairman of the Argentine Dairy Association. The company's manager. Mr. Battley is informed, would have no objection to abandoning the trade mark if that is desired by interests who consider it conflicts with the New Zealand selling brands. It is unthinkable, eays the Argentine body, that New Zealand exporters could believe that such an old-established and highly-reputable firm as Elowson and Wester would resort to the use cf a copy trade name to try and gain an advantage on the market. On the contrary, like most Argentine firms, that in question was trying to better its position on the London market by the only lawful - methods —iraproving the quality of its export, ensuring uniformity of 'type and organising sales. It had suffered too much by past errors to now resort* to fraudulent means to conquer the market. The letter, dated Buenos Aires, July 8, is, Mr. Battley stated last evening, an answer to statements concerning | "Zelandia," which were published in the press of New Zealand. Copies of repprts appearing in the Herald on the matter were forwarded to the Argentine Dairy 1 Association and the explanation | forwarded to the Viqe-CousuL > ?
