ONEHUNGA BOROUGH.

COMPLETION OF DRAINAGE. The Onehunga Borough Council m«t last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coidicutt, presiding. The Treasury advised that no subsidy was payable under the Government unemployment relief legislation where the labour cost was less than 60 per cent, of the total cost of the relief work. It was decided to expend £75 voted by the Returned Soldiers' Association in employing unemployed ex-soldiers in laying down grass margins in the streets, the council to subsidise the sum £ for £. Mr. J. Dawson, civil engineer, is to be asked to prepare a report on the undrained portions of the borough, in conjunction with the drainage of Ellerslie and part of One Tree Hill south of Campbell Road. The solicitor to the Municipal Association advised that certain clauses in the proposed by-law for regulating the driving of cattle through the borough were too drastic, and would not be upheld in Court. He suggested certain modifications, which will be considered in committee. The Royal Oak School Committee wrote asking for a reduction in the price of water to be used in the proposed swimming bath. The Mayor said the council was supplying the water to the Mount Roskill Road Board at lOd a 1000 gallons, and the latter body would supply the school. It might create a difficult precedent if the request for a special concession were granted, for the council was already supplying Ellerslie and Mangere schools. The matter will be considered in committee. The Valuation Department wrote asking the council to reconsider its decision not to appoint an assessor. In view of the fact thai there are now at least two objectors, it was decided to appoint Mr. A. Robb as - assessor. The council accepted the offer of Mr. de 'Wolfe to donate 20ft. at the corner of Arthur Street West and Quadrant Road.
