Mabee to the post o£ secretary o£ the Auckland Trotting Club " Sentinel" penned the following in the Otago Witness:—"There seems to be a widespread regret that Mr. Mabee has decided to drop his position of stipendiary steward. Mr. Mabee proved himself a good man, and the light-harness sport is unlucky in losing his services. The writer first met him a good few years ago at the Federal Club in Christchurch, when, in the course of conversation, he said: 'You are up against the stipendiary stewards?; 'Not if they know their business,' replied this scribe."
